The context
NEEDOH is a sensory toy brand shipping fidget toys, stress balls, and tactile playthings to families, educators, and occupational therapists worldwide since 2018. The catalogue spans dozens of SKUs — Nice Cube, Gumdrop, Dream Drop, Dohjees, Fuzz Ball, seasonal advent calendars — each with its own texture, weight, and use case. The site had to handle both playful discovery for casual shoppers and structured research for educators buying in bulk.
The problem
- Wide catalogue, varied buyer intent — a parent looking for one Christmas gift and a school buying 200 units for a classroom need different journeys through the same store.
- Sensory toys are a category where photos and video do the heavy lifting; static catalogue thumbnails don’t tell buyers what the product feels like.
- Brand identity is bold and playful — the site had to match that energy without sacrificing conversion clarity.
- Educational buyers (schools, therapists, SEN specialists) need a distinct content surface with resources, use cases, and bulk-purchase paths.
- Seasonal launches — advent calendars, holiday collections — spike traffic and require merchandising flexibility without a developer in the loop.
What we built
- Playful, tactile homepage — bold brand chrome, category tiles for “Exercise & Fitness,” “Toys,” and “Educational Resources” so different buyer types find their path within seconds.
- Product-forward hero rotation highlighting flagship products (Nice Cube, Gumdrop, Dream Drop, Advent Calendar) with quick-buy paths to each.
- Editorial product pages with room for product photography, texture close-ups, use-case guidance, and reviews per SKU.
- Educational Resources hub — a dedicated content area for schools, therapists, and parents looking for how to use sensory toys in learning and calming routines.
- Reviews and social proof integrated site-wide so returning buyers and new visitors see real feedback from families and educators.
- Seasonal merchandising tools so the NEEDOH team can spin up advent, holiday, and back-to-school collections without a developer.
Technical decisions
- WordPress with WooCommerce for the storefront — the client team edits products, prices, and content themselves, no developer required for day-to-day changes.
- Custom category architecture supporting both product-first and audience-first navigation (product type vs. use case).
- Optimised product-page template with generous room for photography, ingredient/material notes, and buyer education.
- Mobile-first responsive design — the majority of sensory-toy discovery traffic is on phone.
- Structured data for Product, AggregateRating, and Organization so category and product pages render rich results in Google.
- Speed optimisation across the catalogue (image formats, lazy-loading, Core Web Vitals tuning) so seasonal traffic spikes don’t degrade the browsing experience.
The outcome
A storefront that reads like a brand and shops like a store. Casual buyers get a playful discovery path; educators and therapists get a dedicated resources hub. The NEEDOH team runs day-to-day merchandising and content updates without a developer — the site is a workspace for them, not a black box.
