Website Design Cost in the USA in 2026 — Full Guide

What US websites actually cost in 2026 — bands from DIY to enterprise, hidden costs, and how to save money without losing quality.

Ask ten US freelancers or agencies “how much does a website cost?” and you’ll get ten different answers, all starting with “it depends.” That’s not useful when you’re a business owner trying to budget. This guide gives you the actual numbers — the bands most US projects land in in 2026, what changes the price up or down, and where the hidden costs hide.

I’ve quoted and delivered 120+ websites over the past eight years across US, UK, UAE, and EU markets. What follows is the 2026 US pricing reality — not marketing copy, not agency puffery.

The short answer: website design cost bands in the USA in 2026

Most US websites in 2026 land in one of six bands. Costs vary by region — see my city-specific guides for Texas, California, New York, and Florida. If your project fits cleanly into one, use the number as your budget. If it straddles two, use the higher band as your ceiling.

  • DIY builder site (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify default theme) — $0 to $500. You do the work. Fine for testing an idea, painful once you scale.
  • Marketplace freelancer (Fiverr, Upwork entry-level) — $200 to $1,500. Wide quality variance. Cheap if you know exactly what you want and can manage a junior.
  • Single-page landing site (senior freelancer) — $800 to $1,800. One page, form, mobile-tuned, hosting setup included. 3–7 days.
  • Small marketing site, 5–8 pages (senior freelancer) — $1,800 to $3,500. Home, about, services, contact, blog. 1–2 weeks.
  • Medium marketing site, 10–15 pages (senior freelancer) — $3,000 to $6,000. Full IA, case studies, service depth. 2–4 weeks.
  • Custom Shopify or WordPress build (senior freelancer or small studio) — $4,000 to $20,000. Figma-to-code, custom theme, integrations, animations. 4–10 weeks.
  • Full custom build (agency) — $15,000 to $150,000+. Discovery, design, dev, project management, QA. 3–6 months.
  • Enterprise (large agency or specialist) — $150,000 to $1,000,000+. Multi-stakeholder discovery, custom CMS, ongoing retainers. 6–18 months.

What actually drives the price up or down

Number of pages

A one-page landing site is not 1/10 the cost of a 10-page site. Setup, hosting, integrations, and design system work is the fixed cost — pages add incrementally. Roughly: first page $800, each additional page $150–$300 depending on complexity. A 10-page site lands at $2,300–$3,800, not $8,000.

Design origin

Template swap ($300–$800 add-on), Figma provided by you ($0 add-on — biggest saver), design from scratch ($1,500–$4,000 add-on). If you can commission a Figma from a designer for $500, then hand it to a developer, you’ll save $1,000+ vs. asking a developer to design from scratch.

Custom features / integrations

  • Contact form → $0 (bundled)
  • Multi-step quote form with conditional logic → $200–$500
  • Booking / appointment system (Calendly, Cal.com, custom) → $150–$800
  • Newsletter integration (Mailchimp, ConvertKit) → $100–$300
  • CRM integration (HubSpot, Pipedrive, Salesforce) → $300–$1,500
  • Live chat (Intercom, Tawk.to, Crisp) → $100–$300
  • Payments (Stripe, Square, PayPal) → $300–$1,000
  • Multi-language / multi-currency → $500–$2,500
  • Membership / gated content → $600–$2,500
  • Custom search / filtering → $400–$1,500

Ecommerce vs. marketing site

Ecommerce always costs more. Shopify custom themes start at $4,000, WooCommerce at $3,000. Add $500–$2,000 for product data import (100+ SKUs). Add $500–$1,500 for tax and shipping configuration. Add $500–$1,500 for review widget integration, subscription apps, or wishlist/comparison features.

Content — the invisible cost

The single biggest cost variable is not code — it’s content. Projects where you have copy and images ready ship on time. Projects where the developer is waiting for copy for four weeks bleed into month two. Budget $500–$3,000 for professional copywriting or $200–$1,000 for professional photography if you don’t have it.

Pricing by developer type — what you’re actually paying for

DIY (Wix / Squarespace / Shopify default theme)

Cost: $0–$500 setup, $16–$49/month platform fees.
Time: weekends over 3–6 months if you have zero experience.
Good for: pre-revenue idea validation, hobby projects, single-founder side projects.
Bad for: anyone whose time is worth $50/hour or more. You’ll spend 40 hours building something a freelancer would ship in a week for $1,500.

Marketplace freelancer (Fiverr, Upwork, PPH)

Cost: $200–$1,500 for a small site.
Time: 1–3 weeks (variable — depends on the freelancer).
Good for: known-scope work with clear references. Fine if you can manage a junior dev and specify every detail.
Bad for: anything where you need judgment calls, ongoing communication, or code quality. Marketplace race-to-bottom pricing means high volume, low attention. Quality distribution is bimodal — top 5% is excellent, middle 60% is fine, bottom 35% will burn you.

Senior freelancer (direct)

Cost: $800–$20,000 depending on scope.
Time: 3 days to 10 weeks depending on scope.
Good for: most US small businesses and mid-market. You get direct communication with the person coding, ownership of the code, and no agency overhead.
Bad for: six-figure enterprise projects with multiple stakeholders and formal discovery phases.

Small studio / boutique agency

Cost: $8,000–$50,000.
Time: 6–16 weeks.
Good for: brands that need design + copy + dev under one roof, plus PM. Comfortable if you’re spending $20K+ and want a single point of accountability.
Bad for: anything under $8K — the overhead swallows the budget before code gets written.

Full agency

Cost: $20,000–$150,000+.
Time: 3–6 months.
Good for: enterprise, regulated industries, multi-market rollouts, sites with 10+ stakeholders.
Bad for: almost every small business. You’re paying for account managers, PMs, and slide decks, not code.

Hidden costs — the ones nobody mentions until the invoice arrives

  • Stock photography or licensed images. $30–$200/image on Shutterstock, Getty, or Unsplash+. A 10-page site with 30 images can cost $500–$2,000 in licensing.
  • Premium plugins or apps. Elementor Pro ($59/yr), Gravity Forms ($59/yr), WPML ($49/yr), Yoast Premium ($99/yr). Shopify: Judge.me ($15/mo), Klaviyo ($20–$150/mo), Recharge ($99/mo+). Budget $200–$800/year in software subscriptions.
  • Hosting. Shared hosting ($5–$15/mo — fine for tiny sites), managed WordPress hosting ($25–$100/mo — Kinsta, WP Engine, Cloudways), Shopify plans ($39–$399/mo). Don’t cheap out here — hosting quality directly impacts Core Web Vitals and SEO.
  • Domain. $15–$50/year. Register with a real registrar (Cloudflare, Namecheap, Porkbun) not GoDaddy.
  • SSL certificate. Free if you’re on any modern host. Some legacy providers still charge $50–$200/year — switch hosts if so.
  • Post-launch changes. Every hour of “just one small tweak” adds up. Budget $100–$200/hour for ad-hoc small edits or grab a monthly retainer.
  • Ongoing maintenance. WordPress security updates, plugin updates, backups, monitoring — $50–$200/month with a freelancer, $200–$500/month with an agency.

How to save money without losing quality

  • Have your content ready before you engage a developer. Copy in a Google Doc, images in a Drive folder. This alone saves 20–30% of project cost because it collapses the timeline.
  • Provide a Figma design if you can. A designer at $500–$1,000 for a Figma design will save you $1,500+ vs. asking a dev to design from scratch.
  • Ask for fixed-price, not hourly. Hourly billing rewards slow developers. Fixed price forces the developer to scope tightly and stay accountable.
  • Skip enterprise features you don’t need yet. You don’t need multi-currency, headless CMS, or a custom design system for a 5-page marketing site. Ship the simple version, expand later.
  • Ship a good v1, iterate. A $3,000 site launched in 3 weeks and iterated over 3 months will out-earn a $15,000 site launched in 6 months and never touched again.
  • Avoid the false economy of $200 marketplace jobs. A junior developer who quotes $200 will produce a site that needs to be rebuilt in 6 months. You’ll spend $200 + $2,000 rebuild = $2,200 for what a $1,500 senior freelancer would have shipped clean the first time.

What to look for in a US website designer

  • A portfolio of shipped sites (not just designs — live URLs)
  • Fixed-price quotes with itemised scope
  • Willingness to sign an NDA
  • Ownership of the code delivered to you
  • A written contract and 50/50 payment schedule
  • A post-launch fix window (14 days minimum)
  • Real reviews on Fiverr, Upwork, Clutch, or LinkedIn
  • A responsive first-reply time (under 24 hours)
  • Their own site is fast and well-designed (if a developer’s own site is slow or ugly, that’s the answer)
